Jan 2025 - Ascent from Blaen-y-glyn. Another gorgeous walk and the weather was kind. Enjoyed the Craig y Fan Ddu and Graig Fan Las approach to Waun Rydd as always, with the cloudscapes stunning eastwards. Waun Rydd's summit, marked by a meagre cluster of rocks, was in the mist as seems to be standard when I'm up there. As the cloud rose, voices of farmers could be heard - a major sheep herding operation was in progress. Tons of Collies bombing about and lines of sheep retreating from the hills. Farmers screaming from quad bikes. At one point, two sheep reached the escarpment's edge, almost immediately followed by a Collie which then forced them down almost vertically into the combe of Gwaun Cerrig Llwydion. I looked over the edge, expecting to see a pair of tumbling ovines, however they astonishingly made it onto shallower gradients. The whole spectacle was amazing, but I was relieved when the soon-to-have-a-sore-throat farmers had gone. By this time, only a thin layer of cloud remained. A slight Brocken Spectre emerged on the Craig Cwareli section of the escarpment. The summit of Fan y Big was glorious as always, possibly my favourite spot in all of the Brecon Beacons. It was my 22nd time up there which included a drunken wild camp some years ago. Fabulous views across to Cribyn, Pen y Fan and Corn Du, and the Black Mountains looked lovely to the north-east. Folk were both confused and amused by the headwear I donned. Stayed up there for ages before the reluctant stank back to the car. Saw what I think was a Sparrowhawk when driving past Talybont Reservoir.
