Walk 157 - Foel Grach, Carnedd Gwenllian
A decade ago - disaster description
Distance: 15.2km
Ascent: 770m

Aug 2022 - Ascent from Llyn Eigiau. Fantastic day in the mountains - didn't see a soul. Total bliss. Last walked from this start point a decade ago. Noticed a new memorial to the 1925 disaster in Dolgarrog on the way to the triple-gated road that leads up and into the Eigiau valley. Click the links to read more about this tragic event. Strange that it has been ten years, almost to the day, that I was last here - a fifth of my life! The atmosphere, especially as you pass the broken dam, remains. The first few miles into Cwn Eigiau is absolutely gorgeous with Pen Llithrig y Wrach and Pen yr Helgi Du dominating the head of the valley, great crags on the northern flank of the latter. A mostly pathless slog from a disused quarry leads up eventually to Foel Grach's summit and I had the obligatory peek into the bothy/rescue hut situated here. Now in cloud, I crossed to Carnedd Gwenllian for lunch. The descent was mostly pathless but bouncy tussocks made for quick progress. A real feel of isolation and untouched wilderness here and the colours were stunning. Once back at the car, I met some humans who kindly offered to drive ahead and open and close the three gates. Bonus!
