Walk 113 - Y Garn, Elidir Fawr, Foel-goch
Distance: 13.9km
Ascent: 1233m
Dec 2019 - Ascent from Llyn Ogwen. An amazing day on the mountains with ever-changing panoramas due to the intermittent cloud. So few people about, and the forecast rain never arrived. Took the Devil’s Kitchen route up to the col, before turning northwards for the climb up to Y Garn. Some of the largest cornices of snow I’ve ever seen kept me entertained for the long trudge out towards Elidir Fawr, where the weather brightened significantly. Views down the valley to Nant Peris and to Moel Elio and partners were great. Met a chap from Warwick and his dog, Oscar, on the ascent to the summit of Elidir Fawr. Great company for half hour or so. Can you spot Oscar’s head over the summit cairn? The Marchlyn Mawr reservoir looked glorious as did the ridge up to Mynydd Perfedd. Once I’d arrived at Foel-goch’s summit, the cloud cleared over Pen y Ole Wen and the northern Carneddau. There were also great views down to the Ogwen Valley with Tryfan standing proudly. After the final slog up within touching distance of Y Garn’s summit, I enjoyed one of my favourite descents - the north-eastern shoulder of Y Garn. Superb mountain day.
