Bright Angel Trail - Grand Canyon
Distance: 19.6km
Ascent: 1061m

Aug 2016 - (with Gemma) A sensational walk; an amazing day. After driving from Las Vegas, setting out at 3am, we arrived in Grand Canyon Village at 7:30am. I’d chosen the Bright Angel Trail down to Plateau Point, a walk of almost 20km that dives down over a kilometre from the Grand Canyon’s south rim. It was a real oddity to be descending first and then climbing more than the height of Scafell Pike, back out of the canyon later. During the walk down the views were stunning and we encountered many lizards and squirrels, and a blue Steller’s Jay! There were frequent breaks as the heat turned oppressive. As we walked the final two miles of the descent out onto the plateau the views east and west were beyond words. We rested underneath an overhanging rock at the point to take it all in: the Colorado River below and the sheer magnitude of the canyon’s multiple rims around us. A Californian Condor even flew over! Gemma described the four-hour climb back out of the canyon as the hardest walk she’d ever done. Frequent shade and water stops were made for the duration and we both understood afterwards why the walk we’d completed is described as ‘extremely strenuous.’ Just an unforgettable experience. I took over 150 photos and below is a small selection. Spot the condor!
