July 2017 - (with Gemma) Ascent from First, Grindelwald. Just a fantastic mountain hike took us to the top of our first Alp! A long cable-car ride took us to First, high above Grindelwald. After exploring the immediate area, including the cliff-traverse, a high-level metal bridge and balcony walk that hugs the edge of a huge crag, we set off. We saw a few marmots, plenty of jangly cows and a herd of deer as we ascended and the cloudscapes were ever-changing. Height was gained quickly and the oxygen levels made it slow-going in parts. Eventually a saddle is reached and then a pull up onto the south ridge. From here the views of the huge Alps, including the Eiger, the Jungfrau, Schreckhorn and Finsteaarhorn were spectacular. The scramble up the ridge was an unexpected delight, the drops to the east were into the cloud! At one point, there was a very large gap, which was protected by fixed chains. This required a careful downclimb to a notch before scrambling back up to the final summit ridge. We ate lunch on the summit, which was surprisingly mild. Views from the top were majestic. Descended the same way, enjoying the scrambles in reverse
