Aug 2012 - (with Gemma) Ascent from Glen Nevis. This walk is known as the Ring of Steall and we've wanted to do it for ages. It didn't disappoint. Seven summits, four of which are Munros in a glorious setting with plenty of exposed sections and stunning situations including the aptly named Devil's Ridge! We rose at 7:00am for the 70 mile drive to Fort William and made our way to the head of Glen Nevis. From there the walk through Nevis Gorge to Steall waterfall was beautiful. Like last year, Gemma immensely enjoyed the wobbly wire bridge crossing of the river and the waterfall was once again stunning. From there, the climb began proper and it took two hours to steeply ascend to the first summit, An Gearanach which was where the wind really began to gust powerfully, making the narrow crossing onto An Garbhanach exhilarating. Eventually we scrambled up and over Stob Coire a' Chàirn and onto the summit of Am Bodach, where we had lunch and drank in the awesome views. After ascending Sgor an Iubhair we decided to go for the Devil's Ridge which leads over Stob Choire a' Mhàil and up towards Sgùrr a' Mhàim despite the wind. It can only be described as an astonishingly narrow ridge where deviation from the crest is impossible but it was brilliant. There was plenty of ducking down to let the wind pass and in places it was literally a foot wide. One section requires a climb down and shuffle along past protruding boulders with a 300m plus sheer drop to the right. Ridiculous exposure where Gemma decided to comment that she'd seen a nice mushroom! The descent from Sgùrr a' Mhàim took an age but there was some scree running involved which was fun. A riverside path took us back up to the car park. A long walk with a great deal of ascent and frightful exposure but excellent. We loved it!
