May 2026 - (with Gemma) Magaro Peak is the highest peak in Galicica National Park. Located just a short drive from Ohrid, it is famous for offering stunning, simultaneous views of Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa. The trailhead started at the Lipova Livada mountain pass. The drive up to this point was absolutely stunning, hair pin bends galore. We loved this walk, and sang Disney songs on the way up and way down through the wooded sections to keep the bears at bay. Songs included You’ll be in my Heart from Tarzan, Colours of the Wind from Pocahontas and When you wish upon a Star from Pinocchio. There was also an ironic rendition of Bare Necessities from The Jungle Book. I think the grizzlies ran a mile after hearing my screeching falsetto. The wild flowers were gorgeous throughout and there were only a few other folk about. The temperatures at this altitude weren’t too bad and there was a breeze on the summit and mostly cool air. The views of both lakes were absolutely beautiful. Plenty of snow fields to cross on the way down on the eastern aspect of the mountain.
