Walk 302 - Illgill Head, Whin Rigg
Distance: 13.7km
Ascent: 670m
Apr 2026 - Ascent from Boot. A wonderful walk in sweltering weather with a lingering haze that prevented distant views but the cloudscapes were fabulous. The route to Burnmoor Tarn from Boot was gradual and offered a real sense of isolation; I saw nobody. The first humans I encountered were in the vicinity of Burnmoor Lodge. Great aspect of the Scafells from this area. Eventually, as I ascended Illgill Head, I had views into Wasdale with Kirk Fell and Great Gable looking majestic with Pillar behind. I had lunch overlooking Bell Rib. Great walk from there, visiting many outcrops over The Screes and a gentle descent over Irton Fell.
