Walk 301 - Great Gable
Distance: 11km
Ascent: 940m
Apr 2026 - (with Gemma) Ascent from Wasdale Head. Magnificent day. Sunburnt! Persuaded Gemma to join me today and she loved it, apart from the steep descent through Little Hell Gate's scree. Lovely gentle ascent up to Styhead Tarn on Moses Trod before the steeper pull up to the summit. We enjoyed lunch at the Westmorland Cairn, 150 years old this year! Incredible views with the Scafells looking amazing. The Isle of Man was clearly seen also. We picked our way carefully down the steep scree to join the girdle traverse underneath the Great Napes. This is a great 'path' which undulates and offers plenty of scrambly sections. Visited Joss Naylor's grave in the churchyard at St Olaf's Church (England's smallest parish church), in Wasdale Head at the conclusion of the walk.
