Walk 299 - Grasmoor, Wandope, Whiteless Pike
Distance: 10.7km
Ascent: 901m
Apr 2026 - Ascent from Lanthwaite Green. I took the direct route up Grasmoor from Lanthwaite Green, which was incredibly steep but exciting. Wainwright describes it as '...probably less difficult than the north wall of the Eiger.' It was my first time on this route and I loved it. Total isolation, plenty of scrambly bits and fantastic rock scenery. Views back across Crummock Water and Loweswater were stunning, and Criffel in Scotland was clearly seen across the Solway Firth. Once I reached Grasmoor End, it was clear that I'd stumbled into the tail end of Storm Dave; the wind was horrendous, made worse by a stinging hail storm on the summit. I crossed to Wandope where the wind made photos difficult, and then down to Whiteless Pike. It wasn't until I got down to High Rannerdale that the wind subsided, and I could have something to eat. Wonderful colours on the trek back to the car.
