Walk 256 - Raise, Whiteside, Helvellyn, Nethermost Pike, Dollywaggon Pike
Distance: 13.9km
Ascent: 1065m
March 2022 - Ascent from Stybeck Farm. Wonderful weather and a frustratingly slow bus journey to the start point. Having descended via the Sticks Pass eastwards from the ridge into Glenridding, I was excited to ascend to this point from the west for the first time. The initial pull up was steep and exhausting but it eased off. Great views over the north-western fells. Spoke to a couple at the Sticks Pass 'middle' before pressing on to Raise and Whiteside. Catstycam looked amazing and the views down to Ullswater were mighty fine. Still some mildish pain from the ribs and back and I was careful not to fall. Spent seconds on Helvellyn summit as it was busyish and there were some rowdy idiots - some had selfie sticks! I prefer Nethermost and Dollywaggon anyway. It's strange how many people, either ascending from Swirls or Wythburn, omit these summits and miss out on the crags and valleys to the north. For such a negligible addition to the height gain, it's so worth it however, I guess, they have their sights set on Helvellyn only. Their loss, my gain. Dollywaggon Pike was the lunch point - gorgeous. Then, it was down to Grisedale Tarn and ultimately down alongside the lovely Raise Beck to Dunmail Raise.
