Walk 246 - Grey Knotts, Brandreth, Green Gable, Great Gable, Kirk Fell
Distance: 13.8km
Ascent: 1097m
Dec 2021 - Ascent from Honister Pass. Started from Honister Slate Mine to get up high early. Again, like yesterday, the same orange glow lit up the heather as it basked in the morning sun. The walk across the tops of Grey Knotts, Brandreth and Green Gable was beautiful. After the summit of Great Gable, I rested for over an hour at one of my favourite places in the world: the Westmorland Cairn. Hidden from Gable's summit, this grassy shelf is gorgeous with the Scafells looking mighty. Absolutely zero wind all day. From the Westmorland Cairn, the views of Wast Water and the Irish Sea beyond were stunning. An inversion meant the sea was under a blanket of low cloud with just the Isle of Man and, further south, the Holyhead high area of Anglesey visible above. I was eventually spotted by another couple of walkers and decided to move on. Descended to Beckhead Tarn and then clambered up Kirk Fell. The comical bulbous views of Gable's west face were enjoyed, and the views from the summit were even better than Gable with Pillar, Ennerdale and the Mosedale Fells looking pretty. It was hard to believe at this point that it would start getting dark in two hours or so. Took the Moses Trod route back towards Fleetwith and back to the car. Another amazing walk.
