Apr 2021 - Ascent from Bowness Knott. Just an absolutely fantastic day on the fells. Parked up at Bowness Knot, before making it obvious I was taking a picture of a bloke in a Land-rover (and his numberplate) who was just sitting there and staring at me. A bit unnerving. The light in lower Ennerdale was fabulous and I took loads of pictures of the gorgeous early morning glassy lake. A fantastic walk up through the valley followed and it was interesting to see how the re-wilding project was coming on. Eventually, after a few miles, I crossed the River Liza and headed steeply up through the woodland, aiming directly for Pillar Rock. I remember describing this area as a lost world the last time I was here and it really is, with a sort of a path that winds its way between crags, and all sorts of mini waterfalls and tree species. It was really tough going though. I couldn’t resist rounding Pillar Cove to visit Robinson’s Cairn before rejoining the high-level route to Pillar Rock itself. Fortunately, there was no ice at all on the Shamrock Traverse. Enjoyed the scramble up to the summit of Pillar. Superb views once again. Then, it was across to Scoat Fell and out to Steeple where I had lunch. Next, was Haycock where the clouds started to blanket the southern fells and where I encountered the first other human of the day. On the descent, I went over on my ankle on Little Gowder Crag which was temporarily annoying. The descent from there along the ridge was a delight, eventually bringing me down into gorgeous woodland and the outward route. Fortunately, when I arrived back at the car, the weird chap was nowhere to be seen.
