Walk 240 - Great Gable, Kirk Fell
Distance: 12km
Ascent: 1080m
Apr 2021 - Ascent from Wasdale Head. Drove up overnight and arrived in Wasdale by 6am. After a short kip, I was walking by 7:45am. Simply gorgeous weather. Ascended via Moses Trod to Stybeck Tarn then enjoyed the pull up to Great Gable. Spent a while at the Westmorland Cairn and had the entire mountain to myself. The Scafell Massif looked spectacular as always as did the views in all directions, stunningly focused in the cold air. It was icy on the shadowy western flank of Great Gable down to Beckhead Tarn. Then it was up Kirk Fell via Rib End. Always enjoy Gable’s bulbous western aspect (in contrast to the conical shape it presents from Wast Water) when looking back on the approach to Kirk Fell. Can see why it needs a girdle! Spent a while on the summit and then encountered the only two other human beings on the scrambly descent to Black Sail Pass. Superb descent through Mosedale.
