Travelling Trev
Carrantuohill, Cnoc An Chuillinn, Maolan Bui, Knocknapeasta, The Big Gun, Cruach Mhor
Distance: 21.4km
Ascent: 1805m

Aug 2012 (with Gemma) Ascent from Lislebane. Today was a walk of two halves. The first, a delightful route with close up, stunning rock scenery and plenty of exhilarating scrambling, the second a scary, exposed traverse of the Reeks Ridge with a great deal of wavering composure! After a brilliant scramble up Brother O’ Shea’s Gully onto the Beenkeragh Ridge, we ascended steeply to the summit of Carrantuohill which offered incredible panoramas and a geocache. From there we descended and ascended multiple times across the Reeks Ridge which was pulsating and absolutely required concentration which was difficult at times due to our weary legs. The section from Knocknapeasta to Cruach Mhor was really challenging and I lost my nerve a few times. It terrifies me to watch Gemma scrambling over exposed, knife edged ridges or down slippery rock slabs with no hand holds whatsoever. She does so well. To my horror, I realised I’d failed to bring my phone with me (first time ever) and we were still 950m up at 6:00pm. My mum was going spare back at the guest house and even called the Killarney Police to try to co-ordinate a search! When we arrived back at 8:30pm I had some explaining to do! Also we saw mountain goats and a startled mountain hare. An adventure today to say the least.
