Kirkjufell (463m)
Distance: 3.1km
Ascent: 463m

Aug 2014 - (with Gemma) Kirkjufell (Church Mountain) is the most photographed mountain in Iceland due to its position and classic conical shape. It turned out to be one of the best short climbs we’d ever done. The rope sections were exposed; vertical climbs of up to 7 metres in excellent situations. There was much fun in choosing the route up the other scrambly sections and once the final rope section was climbed, we were faced with a narrow ridge to the summit on unstable grass. Many people opt for a guide to climb this mountain however it wasn’t that hairy, providing you have a head for heights and confidence in your ability. Coming back down was equally challenging, especially positioning your body backwards onto the top of the ropes in order to descend. The views of the surrounding mountains and the town of Grundarfjörður were simply stunning from the summit. The best part of the climb up was Gemma getting electrocuted by a farmer’s fence. Hilarious, (for me!)
