Travelling Trev
Hameldown Tor, Hookney Tor, King Tor
Distance: 13.5km
Ascent: 401m

May 2020 - Ascent from Widecombe in the Moor. Up at 5am and walking by 5:30am after taking in a lovely sunrise. Up over Hameldown Tor and then I visited Grimspound, something I was looking forward to. The best known of many prehistoric settlements on Dartmoor, Grimspound dates from the late Bronze Age (about 1450–700 BC). The remains of 24 stone roundhouses survive here, within a massive boundary wall about 150 metres in diameter. There are great views of the site from Hookney Tor and the high ground on Hameldown. After Hookney Tor and King Tor, I came across a memorial stone to four crew members of an RAF bomber who were killed in a crash in 1941. The pilot's mother had the memorial erected the year after the crash. Lovely return down through the valley. Despite the early hour, it was a sweltering one again.
